Pre-WW2 Heavyweight Sterling/.925 Prosthetic Eye Cherub Ring (11) With a spring ring claspToday most ocularists manufacture prosthetic eyes out of medical grade acrylic plastic but before the onset of WW2 in the beginning of the 1940s this process was made using glass. Early glass has small abrasions, impurities, and most importantly tiny air bubbles. If you look closely (pictures #11 & 12) you can see these small air bubbles in the glass eye as well as the tiny red veins in which they used red cotton strands for the life like appearance.
